These fall driving dangers are commonplace in Pittsburgh

If you live in or around the Pittsburgh area, you know that the weather can change on a dime. Furthermore, when summer gives way to fall, everything changes for you as a driver.

There are a variety of fall driving dangers to be aware of, with these six among the most dangerous:

  • Heavy rain: There's no guarantee of heavy rain during the fall months, but you can expect storms to hit the area every now and again. With reduced visibility and longer stopping times, take extra caution if you're on the road.
  • Back to school traffic: This means many things, including the fact that there will be school buses everywhere. Also, expect to see children on the sidewalks, crossing the street and in many other places.
  • Wet leaves: When wet leaves stick to the roadway there's a greater chance of losing control of your vehicle. This is particularly true if you slam on your brakes when traveling over these leaves.
  • Dense fog: Most common during the morning hours, fog makes it difficult to see the road ahead. Just the same, it makes it more difficult for other drivers to see your vehicle.
  • Frost: As temperatures dip, you can expect frost to accumulate on your windshield and possibly the roadways. This is more likely as fall gives way to winter, so prepare yourself accordingly.
  • Sun glare: Even though temperatures are falling it doesn't mean the sun won't come out. Fall is one of the worst times of the year for sun glare, so make sure you prepare accordingly. A good pair of sunglasses is one of the best ways to enhance visibility.

Even if none of these things are in play when you first take to the road, the conditions have a way of changing in a hurry in Pittsburgh.

As you adjust your driving style, don't be surprised if others continue to take risks. If a negligent driver strikes your vehicle, pull to safety and call 911 for help.

In addition to receiving medical treatment for your injuries, contact your insurance company for a clear idea of the steps you should take. At this point, it's your goal to maintain your good health, protect your legal rights and obtain any compensation you deserve.
