The risk of restroom injuries

We’ve all got go sooner or later — but we aren’t usually expecting to wipe out in the process. Contrary to expectations, bathrooms are more dangerous than you might think.

The risk

Studies have found that each year, almost 235,000 people end up in the ER after getting an injury in the bathroom. While these injuries are not oftentimes fatal, they can bring costly medical expenses.

The threat

More than half of the injuries suffered by those who are 85 years or older happen in a restroom. Because elderly folk are oftentimes more fragile, these injuries may require lengthy hospital stays and even physical therapy.

Even for those who are younger, the combination of water and soap at the sinks with floors that are oftentimes tiled can easily lead to a slip and fall accident. With sharp edges and hard surfaces abound, restrooms also pose a high risk for brain injuries.

The action you could take

Because bathrooms can be so dangerous, public restrooms must be maintained closely to prevent slip and fall hazards. If you or a loved one have suffered a slip and fall accident in the restroom of a nursing home, public restaurant, shopping mall or another public facility, you may be able to take action.

An attorney can help you develop a strategy for your case by

  • Acknowledging whether there was a lack of cautionary signage
  • Using witness testimonies
  • Determining if there was an appropriate amount of light
  • Checking if other complaints had been made
  • Explaining whether staff had a reasonable amount of time to respond to hazards

The help you can get

If you or someone you know has suffered any serious brain injuries in a public bathroom, it’s important to seek medical attention. Next, talk to a personal injury lawyer about your options to receive compensation for medical bills, lost wages and other related expenses.
